OUR SHEEP

Katahdin - Dorper Cross

Our lambs are 100% grass-fed and have access to pasture their entire lives. You can rest assured knowing that they are antibiotic-free, non-GMO, and free from growth hormones. They are raised humanely and receive plenty of love and attention from the children’s program that runs adjacent to our pasture.

At Pasture Greg, we take pride in the quality of our lamb and mutton, primarily raised from a Katahdin and Dorper cross. These carefully selected breeds bring together some of the best qualities in lamb production. The Katahdins are renowned for their mild flavor, tender texture, and exceptional mothering abilities, while the Dorpers are celebrated for their excellent conformation, carcass size, and fine marbling.

Katahdins and Dorpers are hair sheep that do not produce wool, meaning their muscles and sebaceous glands do not contain lanolin. Lanolin has a strong odor and leaves a waxy residue, which can contribute to the gamey and greasy taste associated with some wool-producing lamb breeds.

Unfortunately, in the United States, most of the lamb sold for consumption comes from wool-producing breeds, leading many consumers to have a negative impression of lamb's flavor. What many may not realize is just how delicious and tender lamb can be when sourced from breeds like Katahdins and Dorpers.

This cross results in a lamb that thrives without the need for hormones or grain inputs. Our lambs have very few medical needs, allowing us to raise them without antibiotics or other medical interventions. This commitment to natural farming practices ensures that the meat you receive has a mild flavor and the tender, silky texture that high-quality lamb is known for.
